Problems with writing

I homeschool my 2 children (8 years old) and have a rough time getting them to practice writing (composition). They can make up stories and pretend fine, but when I try to get them to write/type/orate on any topic, they clam up. Anyone else have this problem? Any thing you've tried with success? We use Writing Strands, but with minimal success.

    Hi,

I homeschool too and found neither of my boys "wanted to write" until they were about 10. I don't know where you live but the following are available worldwide. I signed up to Bravewriter, an online writing site www.bravewriter.com We have done the Kids write basic, a six week course with a teacher (we had Suzanne), she gives fun assigments and you post them to the group. My kids loved it!
We also took a six week course with Rita Cevasco (again Bravewriter) with a Master of Arts in Speech and Language Therapy. She has extensive training in dyslexia and various reading and spelling programs for children with weak reading and writing skills. She was so great! It was a really intensive course for me as a parent, but it opened a whole new perspective on how to teach writing. I would highly recommend her class. Your chiildren are still young, but you may want to read about "dysgraphia" to see if any of it resonates with you and your children.
I have heard wonderful things about Excellence in Writing but I have not used them yet. http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/
