Stress is an often overlooked but prominent contributor to reading difficulty which is often seen in combination with other root causes. Some children become so stressed about their inability to read that the downward spiral of frustration and anxiety leads to a complete collapse of reading ability.

One of the most controversial educational questions is, what causes dyslexia? It has baffled teachers and psychologists for over a hundred years. David Morgan examines what he sees as some of the possible causes.

Learning “Reading, Writing and Arithmetic” are critical rites of passage for schoolchildren. People are judged on their spelling, throughout their lives. Yet for one in four children in the English-speaking world, who reach the age of eleven, are unable to spell. The reason for this almost always lies in their natural learning style. There is usually no reason for them not to become good, consistent spellers.

Dr. Sally Shaywitz is the Audrey G. Ratner Professor in Learning Development, and Dr. Bennett Shaywitz is the Charles and Helen Schwab Professor in Dyslexia and Learning Development and Chief of Child Neurology at Yale University. Together they head The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity, which studies the correlation between reading and IQ in dyslexic and typical students, shedding new light on what has been termed “the hidden disability.” Dyslexic students are often frustrated or confused as to why certain assignments – reading, for example – take them longer to complete than their peers. “Someone once said to me, ‘I wonder what it feels like when a child first realizes that he or she can’t do what those around him or her are doing.’ And that was really quite devastating,” says Sally Shaywitz.

People with dyslexia often struggle with the ability to accurately decode and identify what they read. Although disrupted processing of speech sounds has been implicated in the underlying pathology of dyslexia, the basis of this disruption and how it interferes with reading comprehension has not been fully explained. Now, new research published by Cell Press in the December 22 issue of the journal Neuron finds that a specific abnormality in the processing of auditory signals accounts for the main symptoms of dyslexia.

I just got back from Irlen screener training and I have discovered something incredible: I see distortions when I read. The reason this is incredible is because I had no idea I had this problem. This realization has changed my world for the better! At Easyread we know that Irlen Syndrome is one of the seven causes of reading difficulty. 66% of people diagnosed with dyslexia have some form of Irlen issues. 46% of people diagnosed with learning problems have some form of Irlen issues. These numbers are huge, yet so few know about this syndrome.

Management of learning related difficulties can be complicated, and for parents trying to navigate the web of services that may or may not be available to their children, it can become a daunting task.  That said, one lesser known challenge that many children with learning-related difficulties face is called “Dyspraxia”.  This article is a brief attempt to clarify some terminology, highlight signs and symptoms of dyspraxia, to aid parents and professionals in early identification, and an overview of some common interventions found to be effective for children experiencing dyspraxia.  With this information, parents may be better equipped to make informed choices that will help their children learn and develop.
